This morning, I went to the "pick-your-own" farm again. (For more details about the farm, please refer to my previous blog post here).
This time, a young gentleman—probably the next generation of the founding farming family—guided me around and showed me the "hidden rows" of okra and courgettes. When I mentioned that I couldn't quite tell what was what, he kindly pointed out where the ripe vegetables could be found.
Following his guidance, I carefully looked underneath the leaves and discovered how lovely okra flowers look.
He also shared an interesting tip: eggplants can get bruised by their own leaves and stems when it's windy. To prevent this, they plant tomatoes right next to the eggplants to act as a windbreak.
Today’s harvest:
- 2 eggplants
- 6 okras
- 1 courgette
- 2 tomatoes
The total came to 700 yen. I remembered paying 700 yen last time, too. Although it was only my second visit, it seems they might charge a flat rate of 700 yen per visitor, regardless of what you pick.
The courgette became free because the farmer noticed a crow had pecked at it.
As I was leaving, the young farmer even picked a few sprigs of thyme and lemon verbena, suggesting I make ratatouille with my harvest.
Sorry to disappoint him, but I ended up making a delicious garlic and chili spaghetti for lunch instead—it turned out wonderful!
