Words of Snow

Since we moved to Sapporo just a month ago, I have already added several new terms to my vocabulary, all related to snow. Here are some of them: 

• Seppi (雪庇): Looks lovely in Kanji, but actually a life-threatening hazard - snow overhanging from a roof.

•  Chakusetsu (着雪): Snow sticking to objects, such as traffic lights and power lines, leading to issues like hidden traffic signs and power outages (when buried in snow!)  
•  Rakusetsu (落雪): Snow falling from roofs or tree branches.
  
  
  
• Haisetsu (排雪): The removal of snow piled up along roadsides and transporting it to designated sites.
  
  
  

All of these are terms you would rarely, if ever, use in warmer regions, including Fukuoka.
