Throw Away!

How would you deal with edible but tough-to-eat parts of vegetables, such as the outer leaves of cabbage or the stalks of broccoli?

Here in Sapporo, bins for discarding unwanted vegetable parts are available in most larger grocery stores. While some of these scraps are composted or turned into animal feed, others are taken by shoppers for home use. From a practical standpoint, leaving those parts behind makes sense rather than taking them home only to throw them in the trash to be incinerated. Yet, I still feel awkward doing it. Perhaps I'm just tightfisted; I hate throwing away anything I've paid for, whether it's chewy cabbage leaves or broccoli stalks that feel almost like logs.
