My New Playground in the City Center

Nakajima Park is currently my No. 1 favorite go-to spot in Sapporo. Conveniently located in the city center, a 30-minute cycle from our place, it offers a number of attractions that are just my cup of tea. First, Hohei-kan is a beautiful and well-maintained Meiji-era wooden building featured in my favorite manga, Golden Kamuy. Second, the Hokkaido Museum of Literature offers small but interesting exhibitions, and its reading room provides a quiet space and rare materials, such as a variety of local literary zines. The books there are also cleaner and newer than typical library books. This museum also occasionally hosts hands-on events. I have joined a workshop for making miniature books, which actually inspired a new project of my own! Third, there is a modern concert hall where you can look around the spacious and lavish interior even when no concert is being held. Walking through the empty courtyard and the lobby with its grand staircase all alone, I felt as if I had been left behind...

Private Dental Check-Up

Today I visited my dentist for a periodic check-up. I used to do this in Fukuoka every three months, which was covered by the national health insurance system, meaning my copay was 30 percent of the total cost. Probably for some complex professional reasons, it always took three or more visits to complete the whole procedure. When I moved to Sapporo, I took the same steps at first, paying 2,000 to 3,000 yen per session (plus a bit extra for snacks or splurging on unnecessary items for "since I came all the way" reasons). At the end of my first check-up sequence in Sapporo, the dentist told me, rather sympathetically, that since I had no specific dental problems, my next check-up could not be covered by insurance and would cost me 10,000 yen out of pocket. Modern Time Saizeriya

Today, I had my morning treat at Saizeriya for the first time in ages. Chocolate cake, espresso and regular coffee from drink station: 500yen To my surprise, everything was done without human intervention except for being shown to my seat. Ordering was done through my own smartphone—using my own battery. When my cake arrived, I had to grab a fork from the box on the table and serve my own coffee. Then, I paid the bill at a self-checkout counter. ...Isn't the restaurant taking advantage of its customers by making them do all the work themselves and use their own phones, all in exchange for cheap meals? To top it all off, on my way out, I saw their job advertisement offering an hourly wage starting at 1,200 yen with generous perks... For doing what, exactly?
