Living Alongside the JSDF

A bit of defense intelligence....

In Sapporo, the presence of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) can be felt in everyday life.
With bases located throughout the city—there is even a subway station named Jieitai-mae (In front of the JSDF Base) —the JSDF frequently hosts community events, including open-house festivals and facility tours. I recently applied for a ticket to one of their free concert performances.

Recruitment posters are displayed across the city, and recruitment centers are located right near major transit hubs.

I do not feel threatened by their presence—if anything, it brings a sense of security. But to be honest, I feel uneasy about the underlying reality: the fact that Hokkaido necessitates such a substantial defense force to deter potential threats.
